PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION
Preparing in advance for your newborn session can make the biggest difference in ensuring that you are happy with your final images and get the most for your money.
Babies are only newborns for a short time! It is best to capture your newborn in their first month of life if you desire those quiet, calm, sleepy images. At this age, newborns sleep very soundly and are able to easily be posed, curled up, and transitioned from one position to another.
Your baby is at his or her tiniest and you'll never be able to go back in time to these first few special days of life outside the womb. I'll be sure to capture all of the tiny details, from their little eyelashes all the way down to their toes!
I will provide wraps and headbands but the baby can also be photographed without clothing as well. Parents and siblings look best photographed in lighter, solid colors and busy patterns should be avoided.
You may want to wear layers, as it will be very warm for baby’s comfort.
On the day of the session, try to keep your baby awake for 1 to 2 hours before your scheduled appointment. This will help to get the baby nice and tired for the photos. Your baby will most likely be grumpy during this time, but it may help get the baby into a deeper sleep during the session. Giving a bath is a great way to encourage the baby to stay awake while also preparing for the session by getting rid of any skin flakes that may show up in photos.
Plan to feed the baby just before leaving your home. You’ll also need to bring a bottle with formula or breast milk to have on hand if baby needs a snack. You are welcome to breastfeed the baby in the studio as well. We can stop at any point to calm and soothe the baby if he or she should get upset.
Be mindful that full sessions may take up to 2 or 3 hours depending on how the baby does and how often he or she needs to eat.
Newborns are very unpredictable and we cannot control how they will feel or what they will do, but your baby’s comfort and safety are my top priority. The baby does feed off of your energy, so if you feel anxious during your session, the baby may not rest well. Please know that I am flexible and adapt to the baby, so try not to get frustrated if your baby is crying or not resting well. We can still take beautiful images together!
To maintain a calm and quiet environment, I ask that only immediate family and siblings are present at the newborn session. I also ask that arrangements be made for young siblings to be present only for their portion of the session.
This is an intimate and personal time for you and your family, and I want you to be able to enjoy our time together.
